Michael Barrymore is Big Brother's kind of people
By Anita Singh

Troubled comedian Michael Barrymore is the bookies' favourite to win Celebrity Big Brother, despite his bizarre behaviour since entering the house. The shamed TV star has already attempted to deface a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by poking her eyes out with a lemon squeezer, earning him a telling-off from show bosses. He also launched a bid to rebuild his career by claiming the events of the past few years have made him a "better person".

Barrymore's appearance on the Channel 4 show marks his TV comeback four years after partygoer Stuart Lubbock was found dead in the star's swimming pool.

In a rambling discussion about his life, he said: "If you come through those moments when you lose you, and you get you back, you're actually the better person for it and your work improves because of it. That's providing you come through it."

The 53-year-old made a bid to elicit sympathy from fellow housemates by discussing the death of his former wife Cheryl and revealing his desire to become a dad. Bookmakers installed him as 3/1 favourite to win the C4 show after the opening night crowd greeted him with cheers.
