AMID all the coverage of the collapse of British crisp maker Golden Wonder, it was often claimed that the company, which lost out to Walkers recently, invented cheese and onion crisps in 1962. But Tayto actually invented the cheese and onion crisp in the 1950s.
Golden Wonder, which has gone into administration after several years of losses, has had several owners in recent years, all of which failed to take on the might of Pepsi-owned Walkers, which now controls 25% of the UK snack market. Walkers has spent a fortune on its longrunning ad campaign featuring Gary Lineker and Golden Wonder could never match its marketing might.
Golden Wonder, which employs 850, had losses of £11m in 2004 on turnover of £88m. It is understood to have recorded significant additional losses last year.
