IT SEEMS we're witnessing a "race to the bottom" in political circles as senior politicians attempt to secure a 'man-of-the-people' image as a route to electoral success. We had justice minister Michael McDowell tackling rugby matters in this newspaper last month while the Taoiseach spent some of his Christmas holidays playing the pundit with Setanta Sports. Now look at Pat Rabbitte. When he's not manning the barricades to prevent the arrival of 40 million Poles to Irish shores, it seems he's a bit of a soccer buff. Last Thursday, the Labour leader put pen to paper for the Sun to question the appointment of Steve Staunton as the new Irish soccer boss. "It is one hell of a risk, " Rabbitte observed. Foreign affairs minister Dermot Ahern took umbrage at Rabbitte's opinion and pulled himself away from reforming the United Nations to write an article for Friday's edition of the same tabloid. "Stan is the man who can put the roar back into the Boys in Green, " fellow Louthman Ahern concluded. One of the headlines on the piece said it all, "Come on You PDs!
What do you think? Give our news desk a call."
