FINE Gael TD Paul McGrath (right) made a major New Year's U-turn with his announcement that he'll not be contesting the next general election. When contacted by the Sunday Tribune during Christmas week about speculation that he was set to retire, the Westmeath TD laughed off the rumours and said that he was looking forward to another term in the Dail.
It is understood that McGrath's decision was hastened by party headquarters' insistence on running three candidates . . . instead of McGrath's favoured two candidates . . . in the new Longford/ Westmeath constituency at the next general election. Fine Gael watchers are now keeping a close eye on three other potential retirees which could be electorally problematic for the party, Padraic McCormack in Galway West, Seymour Crawford in Cavan/Monaghan and Dinny McGinley in Donegal South-West.
