THE mysterious 'P O'Neill', so long the name at the end of IRA statements, was apparently given his P45 with the decommissioning of republican weapons, a fact which a report from the International Monitoring Commission is expected to confirm later this month. With that in mind, Cutting Edge was intrigued to see a media statement from the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission on the withdrawal of the British government's on-the-run legislation. The statement was signed by one "Peter O'Neill".
SINN Fein's movement towards more moderate politics continues at a furious pace. Calling an end to the IRA in 2005 looks set to be followed by an attempt in 2006 to jettison of some of the party's less politically attractive economic policies.
Next month's Sinn Fein ardfheis is set to feature a debate between the party's 'policy revolutionaries' and the more moderate 'let'sget-into-government' brigade. A 17% corporation tax rate is all very well, but will the Shinners find consensus on watering down their long-standing commitment to nationalising the banks as well as plans for a 'super tax' on those earning more than 100,000 a year?
