Two cent

I'VE heard about all the comments in recent weeks from Robert Holmes. I never actually read any of it but I've been told all about it by people. How I was above myself in my reaction to not being invited to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. How I was beginning to think of myself along the lines of Ali and Woods. But let's be honest about this.

Robert Holmes is just a very silly man and if he cannot be nice, he should keep his mouth shut.

Going back to the beginning of all this, I was a little bit disappointed about not getting invited to the Sports Personality of the Year. The invite just never came, it was as simple as that but I thought that was because we were on Sky.

I presumed that to be the reason. But then it was pointed out to me that a few of my mates were on there, the Premiership football teams were on there and they are all on Sky as well. I realised then that Sky has nothing to do with it. It was obviously just an oversight.

I left it at that and never went near the BBC, but the papers picked up on it. After that the BBC apologised.

They said it was an oversight and no more. There was nothing malicious in it, it was just an honest mistake. There were no problems. And then Rob Holmes comes out with this stuff. Why? Well he's just press man for the British Darts Organisation and he is just representing them. The entire thing was an attempt to knock us. To be quite honest with to you though, we don't really say anything about the BDO. We're not interested in them. Let them do their own thing and we'll carry on doing ours.

I'm not really sure if Holmes's comments did them any favours, and it certainly didn't do them any favours with me. But at the end of the day it's just silliness on his part. I've got no time for the fella to begin with and if that's his opinion, so be it, I'm not really bothered.

As for the championships down at the Lakeside, it's been on very late at night and I've been working during the day. I've been doing a lot of television and radio recently so I've been coming home and falling asleep at that hour of the night. I have seen some of the action once or twice, the live games at six o'clock.

I've caught a little bit of it then. Jelle Klaasen has been the story and it's been great.

He's a good little lad. I was practising with him not so long ago actually, about two or three months ago over in Holland. He's a nice kid and a very good player.

The BDO championships have been good but there's not a huge gap in standard between the two. I'm told Holmes also said that some of the players I beat in the early rounds were like pub players. Well that's not the case at all.

Some of the guys we invite over from foreign countries, it's their first time playing in front of that many people in an arena like we have with a tremendous atmosphere. I should imagine they get very nervous. I mean you've seen some former world champions down at the Lakeside this week perform very very poorly. That's just pressure. All you have to do is look at Ted Hankey. Here's a player who gets up and throws a 69 average. That's just down to trying too hard on the occasion and if it can get to him, it will surely get to young guys up there for the first time with us.

But if anyone wants to compare the two championships that's fair enough. They pay their money and their TV licence. But I don't think they'll find the statistics point to the BDO Championship being better like some people claim. If there was one championship would I have won as many titles? Yes. Of course I would. I'll go and play their winner. We'll have that challenge again. I've beaten them all so far. We'll play the winner and see how good they are, that's all you can do really. I beat Raymond van Barneveld the other week in a challenge match. But it's not about that either. I don't have to prove myself to people.

For darts as a whole I think it would be better if there was only one championship.

I don't think that's ever likely to happen though. But I'm not bothered. As I said I don't need to prove myself to anyone.
