Harlequins squeeze out Bohs

AIB LEAGUE DIVISION ONE BELFAST HARLEQUINS 31 UL BOHEMIAN 27 Deramore Park

AN excellent game with plenty of excitement, especially in the second half, when Belfast Harlequins upped their game to win the vital league points and also add a bonus point against UL Bohs at Deramore Park.

Harlequins started the day in fourth position in the table with their opponents a few places below, although the Limerick side had lost three games, but these were against the formidable opposition of Cork Constituion, Shannon and Garryowen.

The Belfast side started strongly and looked as though they were to completely dominate early on after the visitors had taken an early lead.

A defensive kick was charged down and Ben Martin, who was his team's hero with 17 points, gathered to touch down and add the points.

This try brought Harlequins to their senses and within 15 minutes they had taken a 14-7 lead. Johhny McClaughlin made a good break to score and shortly afterwards Darren Cave added the second try, with out-half Mike Glancy converting both.

Harlequins proceeded to work hard but then lost vital possession and they also gave away far too many penalties, Martin kicking two to bring his team to within just one point.

Just before half-time with the Limerick side dominating the game, they were justly rewarded when good work by Brian Madigan allowed Gordon Ryan to crash over for Martin to have the points and give them a 20-14 interval lead.

Clancy added another penalty nine minutes into the second period and then within six minutes the game turned in the home team's favour when they added two tries.

Full back Mark Kettyle gathered at pace to score under the posts, Glancy converted and a few minutes later following a forward drive Stuart Philpot added the fourth for Glancy to again convert.

In the final minutes it was all Bohemiams and they were justly rewarded when Martin converted a Madigan try to give them a deserved bonus point.
