CAMERA ADDS 10 lbs TO STRESS ON EDDIE
You might wonder what Eddie O'Sullivan does in the space between internationals and, while he undoubtedly works hard on matters rugby, he still found time in the past couple of months to meet with RTE head of sport, Glen Killane. The contents of the conversation between the pair is being kept under wraps by both parties but as you can imagine yourself, the Irish coach was hardly there to discuss what graphics the national broadcaster would be using for the upcoming Six Nations. It was a highly unusual move from O'Sullivan . . . Killane has had no similar meetings with any coaches in the world of soccer and GAA in the past . . .and it's unlikely he ever will.
Apparently it was O'Sullivan who requested the meeting which leads us to wonder if the coach is a little too media obsessed. Against the Head has heard stories about, and even been on the end of, complaints from O'Sullivan on what has been written about him and his team.
Now correct us if we're wrong here, but isn't there something deeply insecure about a coach who gets worked up about what is written or said about him?
Surely O'Sullivan has the courage of his convictions to do his job without paying any attention to what a bunch of writers and broadcasters think about him. And if he doesn't, he should. It doesn't inspire con"dence.
RUGBY'S RETURN, NOT ROVERS RETURN
Against the Head, the RTE television series (no relation to this column it must be stressed), returns to our screens tomorrow night for a 10-week run with the usual mix of action from and discussion of the previous weekend's "xtures. It clashes with Coronation Street but what the heck, you can catch up with the capers from Manchester on the Sunday omnibus edition. Where would we all be without it, especially in this marvellous age where those of us with shiny digital boxes don't have the capability to record one program and watch another?
One of life's true mysteries.
CHANCE TO SWIM WITH THE SHARKS
The Sunday Tribune and ercrugby. com have a pair of tickets to give away for Saturday's Heineken Cup Pool One game between Munster and the Sale Sharks.
Simply email ccronin@tribune. ie before midday on Tuesday with the answer to the following question: Which current Leinster player plied his trade with the Sale Sharks for two seasons at the turn of the millennium?
