THE longer you live here, the easier it is to deprioritise the rest of the world. Even for a news junkie like myself, the overwhelming proliferation of local news . . . and I'm talking about New York news, here, never mind what's happening elsewhere in the US . . .creates this white noise effect, one that transforms anything that doesn't relate to one's immediate environment into an abstract. Sure, you can scour the internet, checking in with all the key sources for international events; without the NME online, for starters, I'd be way behind on Pete Doherty's (left) arrest record. Slowly, surely, however, you begin to view the world though America's eyes. And it's a seriously scary place. Without my subscription to Ireland's Own, I'd be screwed.
