MY FAVOURITE PLACE JIM SMYTH OBIDOS

UP to last year I would always have said that St Armel in Brittany was my favourite place. I had lived there once upon a time and have visited many times with my family.

However, I'm afraid Brittany got the two fingers last summer when I went to Obidos in Portugal with the Househunters in the Sun crew.

Obidos is just north of Lisbon. It's a beautiful medieval town surrounded by high stone walls, and it overlooks the Atlantic coast. We arrived in the dead of night and discovered that we were slap, bang in the middle of their annual festival.

Everyone was dressed in medieval costume and there was music and dancing throughout the town.

We stayed in a converted convent just on the edge of the city and although it was well after midnight, we were provided with a range of local delicacies and wine until the small hours of the morning. I have a very fond memory of listening to live music while sitting on a bale of hay in the town square and sipping white German beer.

Although it is a small town, it didn't appear to sleep because the people serving beer and wine at 3am were working behind the food stalls at 8am the following morning. I was completely smitten by the energy and unspoilt nature of the town.

Naturally we had work to do while staying in Obidos but I still found time for a round of golf on one of their truly magnificent golf courses and we also organised a trip to a natural lagoon. The food was terrific, and because of the town's proximity to the sea, we enjoyed wonderful seafood and a wide range of fish.

I intend to return as soon as possible because I just fell in love with the place. I simply couldn't find fault with Obidos, it was like a film; so beautiful and untouched by large-scale commercial tourism.
