NORTHERN IRELAND passed an impressive milestone last week. The North now claims to be the first region in Europe with 100% broadband availability. Every household, business, school and library in the North now has access to broadband, after BT won a government contract to provide broadband to the entire population.
Western Europe's fastest growing economy continues to lag far behind.
Eircom claims that broadband availability in the Republic is now at 83%, though others dispute this.
The Republic has the better roads and a better record in attracting hi-tech industry, but the North is miles ahead when it comes to hi-tech infrastructure.
Policy-makers in the Republic should hang their heads in shame.
