ONE thing that will not be displaced any time soon is the European Union's 12star symbol. There are no plans to allocate a symbolic star to any of the new member states from eastern Europe. The EU's flag and all euro coins are adorned by 12 stars, from a time when membership of the club numbered 12 countries.
But there's some consolation in that the physical existence of the 10 member states, which joined the EU in May 2004, is finally being recognised.
EU finance ministers have agreed to change the design of the EU map to include the new members.
The new map will feature on coins to be minted in 2007.
