Close Range: Wyoming Stories (1999) By Annie Proulx This collection of 11 short stories by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Annie Proulx includes the now famous Brokeback Mountain, later translated to celluloid and up for a plethora of Oscars next month. In the film the landscape is actually Alberta in Canada for it was there that it was shot.
In this collection though, the wide open spaces of Wyoming, with its 'tea-coloured rivers' and its spectacular landscape act as a backdrop to the love story of the two young men who find themselves out on the edge of the world, removed both physically and emotionally
