Parents to picket over autism school threat

PARENTS of autistic children in Co Wicklow will protest outside the Minister for Education's clinic in Shankill tomorrow in a bid to prevent their children's school from shutting down.

The Newtownmountkennedy pre-school for autistic children was first opened by the charity of St Catherine's, and currently has 16 students enrolled.

Of these, only seven have been given 'sanction' from the Department of Education, meaning St Catherine's has been funding the education of nine of the pupils since the start of the school year, at an estimated cost of 125,000 a year per child.
