Probe into 14-year-old boy's death at boot camp
Andrew Buncombe

OFFICIALS in Florida are investigating the death of teenage boy who was allegedly brutally beaten by guards at a young offenders' 'boot camp' just hours before he died. A video of the incident apparently shows the guards punching, kicking and choking the 14-year-old.

Martin Anderson died in hospital in Pensacola a day after he entered a militarystyle camp for young offenders.

His death is being investigated by state authorities.

Officials at the camp said guards had to "restrain" the teenager. But state representative Gus Barreiro called the tape "horrific" and said he had "never seen any kid being brutalised the way I saw this young man being brutalised".

Sheriff Frank McKeithen, whose office runs the camp, said "inaccurate statements by both representatives have done nothing but add fuel to an already volatile situation".

The boy's mother, Gina Jones, has demanded the release of the video, telling reporters that her son's organs were so badly damaged they could not be donated.

The teenager was sent to the camp after being arrested for joy-riding in his grandmother's car while she was at church. She had not wanted to press charges. The results of a post-mortem have not yet been released.
