NFL DIVISION 2B WESTMEATH 0-12 TIPPERARY 0-9 A MISSED penalty by Tipperary's Declan Browne was crucial as Westmeath took full points from a closely fought National Football League Division 2B tie at Thurles yesterday. Westmeath were the better side all through. They led 0-8 to 0-6 at half time. Two minutes into the second half, Tipperary were awarded a penalty when Robbie Costigan was grounded. Declan Browne shot low to Gary Connaughton's right but the goalkeeper got down to turn the ball round the posts.
Tipperary also missed a gilt-edged goal chance seven minutes from time, when Brian Mulvihill shot wide faced with an open goal to aim at.
Westmeath deserved to win. Damien Healy was a towering force for them at centre back. Graham Dillon, Rory O'Connell, Alan Mangan and Dessie Dolan were others to shine.
Declan Browne led the way for Tipperary. Andrew Morrissey, Robbie Costigan, Michael Phelan and Brian Mulvihill also did well, despite being on the losing team.
