THE NUMBER of people at work grew by 87,000 in 2005, according to the Central Statistics Office. This 4.7% increase was the fastest rate of growth since 2000. Foreign workers, which accounted for around half of the growth, now comprise an estimated 9% of the labour force.
Over 1.98 million people were working in the final quarter of 2005, according to the CSO's Quarterly National Household Survey. The seasonally adjusted number working was 17,500 higher than in the previous three months. Unemployment was 91,300, up 5,700 on a year earlier.
The construction sector created 25,800 new jobs in 2005, with retail jobs up 19,600 and financial and business services 15,000.
There was a 13,000 decrease in the number working in other production industries.
