Dull and not dusted

FA CUP FIFTH ROUND BOLTON 0 WEST HAM 0 Reebok Stadium

BOLTON have become draw specialists of late, and they now face a tricky FA Cup fifth-round replay at Upton Park after being held at home by West Ham.

This was the fifth-successive game in which Sam Allardyce's side have had to settle for a share of the spoils, but they could have sealed a place in the quarter-final only for Gary Speed and Kevin Nolan to miss two crucial chances.

The Hammers went into the game in confident mood, looking to set a club record for successive victories in all competitions. And they were aiming to make it third time lucky against Bolton too, having lost to them in both the league and the Carling Cup already this season.

The Hammers had the first real chance when Dean Ashton found himself clear 20 yards out only to hoist his effort into the crowd. Play swung back down to the other end, and Bolton captain Kevin Nolan saw his chip cleanly taken by goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.

The home side were beginning to dictate the pace of the game, with Ricardo Gardner and Nolan both prominent.

The Hammers were struggling to make an impact in attack, but Paul Konchesky tried to release Dean Ashton with a glorious through ball only to see Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen race off his line to foil the £7.25 million striker.

Then Konchesky linked up with Marlon Harewood, but Joey O'Brien . . . who was named in the Republic of Ireland squad for the first time this week . . . made a timely clearance.

The Hammers launched a quick counter attack in the 52nd minute with the impressive Konchesky whipping the ball into the area. However, Gardner was first to it and cleared his lines.

It was brief respite for the visitors with Nolan trying his luck from 20 yards, only to see his chip go wide.

Then Simon Davies went close to making the breakthrough in the 55th minute, his toe-poke going inches the wrong side of the post.

Nolan kept finding himself in good positions, but his finishing was not up to scratch and he sent a shot off target in the 59th minute.

Stelios then found the net for Bolton in the 64th minute only for his effort to be ruled out for an infringement.

Ashton squandered a clear chance two minutes later, heading into the side-netting following a cross from Matthew Etherington.

Stelios had a claim for a penalty waved away when his shirt appeared to be tugged by Lionel Scaloni towards the end as Bolton stepped up the pressure. And Nolan was saw his effort saved by Hislop in the 72nd minute with the Hammers being limited to counterattacks.

Veteran striker Teddy Sheringham then stepped off the bench for Ashton in the 76th minute but it was Bolton who continued to look dangerous with Speed heading wide late on.
