WATCHING RUGBY IN THE PUB COUNTS TOO
John Mulligan

SOME interesting research was revealed last week as RTE sought to establish how many people watched television outside the home during the France v Ireland rugby match on 11 February.

AGB Nielsen's viewing research collates data from home viewers only. That can mask the actual audience figures as people still swarm to pubs, despite the smoking ban and higher on-trade alcohol prices, to watch sporting events especially.

AGB Nielsen recorded 585,000 adult viewers for the match on RTE 2, but the station commissioned additional research that showed an extra 216,000 adults had watched the match outside their homes, bringing the total viewing figure to just over 800,000.
