Saving New York on a wing and a prayer

I'M thinking about joining the Guardian Angels. You might remember the acceptable face of New York vigilantism, founded in 1979 by former McDonalds night manager Curtis Silwa to reclaim the streets of NYC, distinguishable by their trademark red berets. Times change; crime rates in NYC are at the lowest levels in 40 years, and Silwa earns a crust these days as a talk radio host . . . a plot was recently uncovered to whack him for dissing departed mob capo John Gotti on air. The Angels continue to make their presence felt, however, largely through their educational programmes . . . having reclaimed the streets, they're taking back the classrooms! They're recruiting locally. I look great in a beret. It's a nobrainer.
