ECONOMIC OUTLOOK



Ireland's unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.5% in January as companies, including Google, created jobs in the fastest-growing economy in the eurozone. The number of people claiming bene"ts rose by 200 to 157,600 last month when adjusted for seasonal swings, according to the latest CSO "gures. The January unemployment rate was revised up from 4.3% after the publication of 2005 payroll and labour force growth data.

The unemployment rate in Ireland is almost half the "gure for the eurozone. The unemployment rate in the dozen nations sharing the euro was 8.3% in January.

Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, reported last week that it will hire 450 workers at a new customer service centre in Cork. Google and Amgen are also to create new jobs in the months ahead.
