PERFECT LIES

WHAT ARE YOU DRIVING AT VIJAY?

Vijay Singh didn't take too kindly to the length of Phil Mickelson's spikes at last year's Masters, and now more recently, it appears he has been asking questions about Mickelson's driver.

When he played alongside the left-hander at the FBR Open in Arizona, Singh regularly found himself being out-driven, so when Mickelson arrived at the course for the third round, an of"cial asked to test his Callaway FT3 driver.

Now, the name of the person who requests that another player's driver be tested is supposed to remain con"dential, but a reliable source has indicated that Singh asked for the test which the driver passed with "ying colours.

Exactly a year ago, Tom Pernice asked for Tiger Woods' driver to be tested following the "nal round of the Ford Championship at Doral. Pernice happens to be a good friend of Singh's.

A coincidence, surely?

AROUND THE WORLD IN 20 PLAYERS The cosmopolitan feel of the top-20 players in the world rankings . . . 10 countries are currently represented . . . is surely good for the game.

America predictably lead the way with eight players, Rory Sabbatini's recent elevation puts South Africa next best with three, England have two, while Fiji, Spain, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Scotland have one each.

Only problem is, for the "rst time in more than six years, Ireland has no one in the top-20 as Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley lie in 21st, 23rd and 27th places respectively.

NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT With Stephen Ames earning $35,000 for the 10 holes he played against Tiger Woods at the World Match Play, it's worth mentioning that Michelle Wie banked her "rst cash as a professional when she "nished third in the LPGA Tour's Fields Open in Hawaii last weekend. Wie "red seven birdies in a "nal round of 66 to miss out on a play-off by one shot.

Having missed the cut in two men's tournaments so far this year, she earned just over $73,000. Even if that pales against her endorsement deals worth $10m, it's still not bad for a 16 year old.
