Monkstown offers the key to period living
Valerie Shanley

THAT old tradition of giving park keys to owners of grand houses by leafy city squares is safe from the property speculators for the moment, at least in the case of this fine Victorian-terraced house in Monkstown, Co Dublin.

All of the residents of Belgrave Square are keyholders to the park which their homes overlook, including the owners of No 13, who have invested care in a wealth of period architectural detail in their twostorey house.

This is a welcoming home too . . . all 334 sq m (3,600 sq ft) of it . . . bright and with modern comforts, overlooking a landscaped rear garden. Granite steps leads to the hall door and through this is the entrance hall. Leading off are grand interconnecting reception rooms, each with marble fireplaces. To the rear is the large, fully-fitted kitchen which has a glass bay window and door leading down to the garden. Upstairs is a charming landing, with high ceilings and a pitched glass roof. There are four nicely spaced bedrooms, with the master being particularly fine in its decorative ceiling, cast-iron fireplace, picture rails and views over the square.

The double bedroom to the rear has similar architectural details and sea views. A large bathroom is also on this level, with corner jacuzzi bath and separate power shower.

Down at garden level is further generous living space . . .

and an area that could function as a separate apartment. The period hallway leads to extensive storage space while French doors open into the large family room. A fifth double bedroom, with glass bay window and door to the rear garden, is located towards the back of the hallway, as is the shower room and the fully fitted kitchen- cum-utility room.

An additional delight is the sunroom, which gives a very fitting entree to the garden, sheltered by the original old stone walls. There is vehicular access from Trafalgar Lane, and parking space for one car.
