Dunne header not enough to save City
Bill Pierce Fratton Park

FA PREMIERSHIP PORTSMOUTH 2 MANCHESTER CITY 1

PEDRO MENDES' breathtaking double earned Portsmouth three points against Manchester City in their bid for survival.

Argentinian playmaker Andres D'Alessandro returned for Portsmouth as Harry Redknapp looked to salvage his side's Barclays Premiership status.

Last week's two-goal hero Georgios Samaras kept his place up front for City while Joey Barton returned from suspension.

Sun Jihai replaced captain Sylvain Distin in defence while Micah Richards got the nod at right-back.

Mendes, a January signing from Tottenham, struck after an hour when a corner was cleared to him on the edge of the penalty area.

With seven minutes remaining Richard Dunne stooped for an equaliser after Georgios Samaras had flicked on at a set-piece, but Mendes lashed home with seconds remaining . . . again after a corner was not cleared.
