JUST as tradition was perpetuated in Leinster with Blackrock's qualification for the Powerade Senior Cup final, Munster's most decorated team, PBC, followed suit to set up a defence of their title against Munchin's.
And the 25-time winners did it in the sweetest manner imaginable as they defeated old rivals CBC 17-11 at Musgrave Park last week. In a complete display, the champions defended solidly and finished clinically, with fullback Jeff Power kicking superbly throughout and captain Brian Dennehy scoring their try. CBC got some semblance of revenge in the quarter-finals of the Junior Cup however, as they prevented a clean sweep for Pres by winning 22-10 at Musgrave Park on Wednesday. In the other quarter-final of the week, Crescent beat Castleroy 10-3.
Meanwhile, favourites Blackrock emulated their senior team in the Leinster Junior Cup as they knocked out the holders Belvedere. The south-side school produced some fine ball-in-hand rugby securing a deserved win through tries from Tom Parsons, Brendan Macken, Brian Kingston and Niall Myron.
Castleknock await in the semifinals after their 6-5 win over Terenure, Mark Coffey the hero with two penalties.
Gonzaga will meet Newbridge in the other semi-final after the Ranelagh school finally got the better of Pres Bray, winning their replay 163, winger David Leyden and Godfrey Greene scoring their tries.
Finally, King's Hospital claimed Leinster's secondtier senior trophy . . . the Vinnie Murray Cup . . . by defeating CBC Monkstown 36-25 in a thrilling game at Kilternan on Wednesday.
