Bacon, roast spuds! Sssh! It's a secret
Katy McGuinness

EVA BERG PILATES GURU

I'M up so early during the week, usually around 5.30am, because I have a few clients that I'd see before they go to work, that my idea of a lie-in on Sunday is to stay in bed until 9.30am.

Our two boys, Aaron (10) and Gabriel (6) would be up a bit earlier but they'll watch a bit of television until we surface.

My husband Jan heads out for the croissants and papers . . . during the week it's porridge and fruit so Sunday is our 'let it all go' day. While he's out I'll be squeezing juice and getting the eggs and bacon on . . . my clients won't believe this, I'm sure they think I'm a complete stickler and that I never let go.

Then we'll all settle down with the papers . . . we get them all because neither of us has time to read them during the week so Sunday is an opportunity to catch up on what's going on in the world. The boys like the motoring sections and the Funday Times. We'd spend a couple of hours reading and drinking lots of coffee.

At around noon we'd head off for a hike or a bike ride.

We all get plenty of exercise during the week so this is for fun, not because we have to.

Jan cycles to work every day and the boys are on the go all week. We'd go up the Sugarloaf or over to the lead mines. If the weather's bad we'd maybe go to the pool at the Glenview Hotel for an hour or two.

When we get home we'd start preparing our main meal . . . because breakfast is late we'd usually have a combined lunch and dinner.

It'll be a big roast fest . . . lots of proteins and vegetables with very few carbs. We eat no potatoes, pasta or rice during the week. I don't think they have any nutritional value and the kids don't like them. I'd make a few roast potatoes on Sunday but only Jan and myself would eat them, the boys just aren't interested.

People expect me to be a vegetarian but on the contrary I'm a big meat eater and Sunday's roast would be organic. I'd eat organic all the time if I could afford it but I do find it very expensive. Both of our families live outside Ireland . . . mine are in Dubai and Jan's in Norway . . .

so obviously we don't see them very regularly. Every second week we'd have friends over, usually other families with children.

Once the children are in bed I'd do a bit of work. I teach more than 30 classes a week and I like to work it all out in advance, to vary the routines, programmes and equipment so that my clients don't get bored.

There are four other teachers at The Secret and we do a lot of our classes on reformer machines that we've brought in from California. Pilates originally started on machines and it's possible to get a huge range of movements from them, to target specific areas and to be more subtle than with work on the mat. I get a big kick from seeing the benefits that my clients get from working with us. Jan would watch a bit of TV while I'm working and then we might have a glass of wine before we go to bed.

We'd be in bed by 10 or 10.30.
