FATHER and son Pat and Karl Henry are at the forefront of personal fitness and training in Ireland. Pat is from Dublin and is now living in Co Meath.
Prior to beginning his career in the area of health and fitness, Pat worked as a bass player in a showband and various jazz bands, and in sales and management, prior to beginning his fitness career as a yoga teacher. Pat went to work in Europe and the US, and spent some time in Los Angeles, where he managed an exclusive Hollywood gym with many famous clients. He opened his own gym in Dublin in 1986. Pat has been married to Marie for 37 years, and has two children, Cathal (33) and Karl (24).
Karl lives in Dublin and has his own personal training company, Karl Henry Personal Training. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from UCD in sports management, Karl also holds two qualifications in personal training. In addition, he makes regular appearances on television and radio, and writes for a monthly magazine. Karl gives lectures and presentations to companies on health and fitness, and Pat and Karl run a series of Wellness programmes together.

Pat on Karl Karl was born in the Rotunda hospital in 1982, and we had to drive through a really bad snowstorm to get there. We had to get a police escort to get us to the hospital, and Karl was nearly born in the car. The garda who was bringing us through was starting to panic because he thought he was going to have to deliver the baby. Karl was a really good child, and never gave us a day's worry. We've been very lucky with both of our boys because they are two fantastic kids, and have never given us an ounce of trouble. We all get on super-well as a family.
Karl was always pretty fit and in good shape, and he was on his school's rugby teams. My other son Cathal qualified as a masseur, and he's a real adventurer. He works for Cyclone couriers, and has gone travelling all over the world.
When Karl left school, he decided to work in the fitness business, and I probably discouraged him in some ways. I felt that it was a good idea for him to move beyond the fitness end of things into areas like sports psychology, because he has a very good mind and is really great at relating to people. He did his degree and set up his own company, and he has really achieved a lot, considering he's only 24.
We work separately but come together on our various Wellness programmes, such as the one last week, where we brought a group of 35 people away to the Park Hotel in Kenmare for a yoga, meditation and fitness weekend, which was a pretty amazing weekend.
Karl and I have loads in common apart from work, and we are both huge Manchester United fans. I think we're very similar in personality, but he isn't as grumpy as me! The worst thing about him is that he never returns my calls, and he's always cleaning his car! He has a much more even personality than me, and he is involved in loads of things, like football. I have always encouraged Karl to have a life beyond work, and I think he has seen things I have fallen into in the past, such as working very long hours. Karl is a Capricorn like me, and he's very focused and determined about what he wants to do with his career. He has a great personality and is fantastic at dealing with people . . . he's very calming, and he's really good at helping his clients to overcome the problems that may be stopping them from achieving their goals.
Karl on Pat I remember Dad being good fun when I was a child. We spent a fair bit of time together, because I used to travel in from Dunshaughlin to Dublin with him every morning, going to my school, St Michael's College. Dad used to come and watch me playing my rugby matches, and he got involved in training some of the teams.
When I was a teenager, we had a very open and trusting relationship, so I was able to tell him if I was going to Wesley or whatever, and tell him all the gossip the next day.
I've been in and out of Dad's gym since I was four or five, and in many ways it was natural that I would go into the health and fitness industry. Dad encouraged me to go beyond personal training, and after college, I went to the Smurfit Business School, very much on his recommendation. I set up my personal training business, and I've a real passion for it and find it very enjoyable.
Dad has always been very encouraging of me, and we have a great relationship.
He's good fun, and can be a bit of a social gossip, and I can't tell him anything or the whole of Dublin will know. We get on really well and we're very similar in personality.
We're both pretty stubborn and a bit short-tempered. We're car fanatics, and I'm really passionate about my car . . . it always has to be spotless. Dad's worst quality is his snoring, and I can't be in a car with him. He gets really hyper behind the wheel and it stresses me out. He's a secret chocoholic, and he raids the biscuit jar! Our favourite movie is Goodfellas, and we're both huge Sopranos fans. We're both into football, and I recently took him over to Old Trafford for his birthday.
Dad has been a real inspiration and support to me, and obviously people compare me with him, so I've worked hard at creating my own brand. I probably see him once a day, if I'm with a client in the gym. He's constantly looking at what I'm doing there and giving me stick about it! When we do our Wellness programmes, we work very well together. I look after the active side of the programmes, such as the runs and hillwalks, and Dad takes care of the talks and yoga, and that end of things.
