NOmatter how trend-conscious you are, or aren't, you can't dispute the fact that a pair of trusty trainers are a must-have in every wardrobe. Whether you collect them as prized possessions and wouldn't be seen dead in anything else, or you are the kind that wear them only in the gym or into work, there is definitely a trainer out there to fit your lifestyle.
Along with the usual revived classics such as Converse, Gola and Green Flash, one particular trend coming to the forefront now is the plimsoll. Reminiscent of English boarding school gameswear, this is one step on from the ballerina pump and is sure to be a hit this summer. Great with a pair of jeans or flippy skirt, they are the kind of easy shoes that can be easily replaced with glamorous cousins when needed.
Trainer and boxer boots have also been coming in for a few seasons now, while skater-style trainers of the late '90s have long been replaced with the foot-fitting fabric ones that fold up and go neatly into your handbag.
In recent years also, brands such as Adidas and Puma have enlisted the design skills of high-profile fashion names such as Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Yohji Yamamoto, adding kudos to their brands.
Whether this has really rubbed off on popular streetwear is debatable but the trend for designer sportswear is sure to continue, with Marc Jacobs and Luella Bartley collaborating with Vans, John Varvatos with Converse and Philip Treacy with Umbro.
Of course, Prada and Gucci have their tennis-meetsgolf-meets-cycling trainers every season but whether you want to fork out nearly 300 for a pair that you can get for a tenth of the price in Dunnes is up to you. My personal favourites this season are the Adidas yellow and gold ones from BT2.
