Police release transcript of 999 call in Mary-Ann murder
John Bingham

BRITISH police have released the transcript of the 999 call made by a man who came across the scene where schoolgirl Mary-Ann Leneghan died last year. Her killers were convicted of murder on Friday.

Desmond Goddard was on his way to work on the morning of 7 May when he came across MaryAnn's friend minutes after she staggered out of a park onto the road. In a 20-minute call to a 999, Goddard relays the first details of a night of rape, torture and murder.

Goddard: "She said her head hurts.

It must hurt, there's a bruise about the size of an apple on it."

Operator: "OK."

G: "Well it's, the blood, is (inaudible)."

O: "Right but there is blood coming from her own head, yeah?"

G: "Yeah, yeah, yeah."

Girl: "I've been stabbed as well."

G: "Oh she's been stabbed as well."

Girl: "There."

G: "Where?"

Girl: "Cut and stabbed everywhere."

G (to girl): "Try to keep calm."

Girl: (inaudible). . . "everywhere."

G: "Oh God."

O: "What's she saying?"

G: "She's saying her friend's going to die, she's bleeding every. . . she's been cut everywhere."

O: "Blood everywhere?"

Girl: "In her face."

G: "In her face and stomach, she said."

O: "In her stomach?"

G: "Yeah, face, stomach and chest.

That's her friend."

Girl: "When they coming?"

G: "They're coming now, darling, honestly. They're on their way."

O: "Any idea who it was?"

Girl: "Cut off my hair and everything."

G: "Oh God, they've cut her hair and everything."

Girl: "My hair, yes."

G: "Oh God. They tried to shave her head by the look of it."

O: "They tried to shave her head?"

G: "They cut your leg as well, did they?"

Girl: "Yeah."

G: "She's got blood coming from just below her (inaudible) on her thigh."

Girl: "Everywhere's cut."

The girl goes on to say she believes there were around five attackers.

Girl: "My head, look at my head."

G: "I can see your head, yeah, I can see your head will hurt."

O: "And this thing on her head?"

Girl: "Metal bar."

G: "Well, I can just see blood running down her hands but . . ."

Girl: "He cut me with a knife on my head and then he hit me with a bottle and then he got me there."

After 10 minutes, Goddard becomes increasingly anxious: ". . .

people just walking past here, you know, just ignoring me."

O: "OK. So what injuries do you think she has?"

Girl: ". . .I got raped as well."

G: "Oh, she got raped as well."

Learning that a gun was involved, the operator looks for more details.

O: "Have you seen anyone around and about at all?"

G: "No one, not a soul. . . walking like going into town or whatnot but nothing else at all, well they'll be gone by now, won't they."

O: "Yeah, yeah. I know she's in real stress, could you just ask her how long ago she thinks this happened?"

G: "How long ago did this happen, darling?"

Girl: "About, I got drugged, it's been happening for hours, all night."

The operator explains that because a gun has been mentioned the area is being searched, with an ambulance waiting nearby.

Almost 16 minutes into the call, Goddard learns that Mary-Ann is 16.

G: "Her friend's 16, oh, please get them out now because. . ."

Girl: "Please hurry up."

G: "I'm starting to lose it a little bit."

A full 20 minutes into the call, Goddard finally sees the first police car and hangs up.

Operator (aside): "F****** hell."
