Parades were very much in the news in this edition of the Derry Journal. The Ancient Order of Hibernians was out in force at Dungiven and Strabane on St Patrick's Day. Strabane was packed as thousands turned out for the annual procession led by nine bands.
Brother Quinn of the Dublin branch of the AOH addressed the gathering saying that he had been born in county Armagh in the parish that produced the first Orange Lodge in the world, and he had come into the world "to the sound of an Orange party beating their drums on the roadside, and ever since". To cheering he proclaimed that "The Ancient Order of Hibernians were the descendants of the gallant defenders of faith and country whom Rory Og OMore combined together to protect their faith from the hell-hounds of England".
In the same edition, the Journal reported on an outbreak of "Orange Ferocity" in Donemana during an Orange march through the Tyrone village on 10 March. The Orangemen marched through the village attacking houses with stones and shots were fired, terrorising the local population. The marchers attacked McGuinness's public house and windows were smashed.
