PUNTERS are brought down to earth with a bang today, with this afternoon's two race meetings at Limerick and Downpatrick, following hard on the heels of four days of top class action from Cheltenham. It's a case of going from one extreme to the other, and the only factor the three fixtures have in common is that winners will be equally hard to come by.
Former Gold Cup winning jockey Adrian Maguire has made a good start to his training career, and he will be hoping to get proceedings off to a good start at Limerick by saddling his well-regarded mare Celestial Wave to take the listed Dawn Omega Milk EBF Mares Novice Hurdle.
Maguire nominated this race for the progressive sixyear-old after she collected at Clonmel last time, and Nina Carberry, who gets on so well with Celestial Wave, takes the mount again here. The duo will be hard to beat over a course at which they have enjoyed success in the past, and should have the measure of the likely dangers Tiarella, Mise En Place and Nutmeg Tune.
The Grade 3 Bank Of Ireland EBF Mares Novice Chase looks to be a very competitive affair, with the likes of American Jennie, Kerry's Cottage and Sunami Storm in the line-up, but GoodonyouPolly, representing the Dun Doire team of trainer Tony Martin and jockey Ruby Walsh, has shown sufficient ability to suggest that she can prevail at this level. Four-time point-to-point winner Wont Leave An Oat attracted plenty of support in the market last time at Thurles, and could be the surprise package.
Walsh and Martin have a good chance of doubling up through Royal County Star in the Newcastle West Volkswagen Autos Handicap Hurdle. The Edward O'Grady-trained Overbury Affair caught the eye when staying on well in the latter stages on his chasing debut at Naas, and may be the answer to the Mullins Electrical Beginners Chase.
His stable-companion Clopf, who won his only previous racecourse start over the same course and distance in January, will have his share of supporters in the Cube Printing (Pro/Am) INH Flat Race, but may have to give best to recent Clonmel scorer Woodbine Willie, from the Philip Fenton stable.
Meanwhile, at Downpatrick, Cosmic String is Dermot Weld's only runner at the meeting, and the four-yearold can make the journey worthwhile with success under David Evans in the opening Bet At Toals On Course SP Shop Maiden Hurdle. Saipan may be the answer to the Visit www. toals co. uk Handicap Hurdle.
