ANDREW MAXWELL COMEDIAN A day to lounge around
Katy McGuinness

THE ironic thing is that although I have a gig tonight in the Laughter Lounge, I very rarely perform on a Sunday. It's usually a complete day of rest and I like it that way. Whether you're religious or not, it's good to have a day off.

Anyone who tries to talk to me about business on a Sunday gets short shrift.

On Fridays and Saturdays I could have two, or three or even four shows each night, club-hopping around London. As a consequence, I'd usually have a mild hangover on Sunday and I start the day as late as I possibly can, which is even later than I start my day the rest of the week.

I live in London and usually meet up with friends for a pub lunch and a read of the Sunday papers. I like to go somewhere within walking distance of home so I can have a few drinks and not worry about the car. I don't cook but I do like a Sunday roast so it's either the pub or someone's house if they can be persuaded to invite me.

Since I became a parent, I've started going on outings on Sunday . . . it's like being a tourist, going to see all the things you never would have bothered with before you had children. Last week, my son and I went to a safari park and watched the animals sleeping for a few hours. We've been to lots of castles and museums too.

If I'm abroad then I might drop into a church or some other place of worship to see what form of religious activity the locals get up to. I was in Tokyo a couple of weeks ago and went to a Shinto shrine. I like airports on Sunday too because they're quieter and the long haul-flights are always cheaper.

Both my grandfathers were street preachers and I was brought up fairly religious although I'm lapsed now. The older you get you're just so busy whether with work or niggling little chores like fixing the back light on the car that it's great that there's one day when you kick back and take it easy.

In the evening, I like to watch a bit of TV, maybe a new Simpsons or a nature documentary and take a major bath. I do a fair amount of bathing and showering the rest of the week but Sunday's bath is the big one . . . I stay in for about an hour and read all the Sunday magazines and drop them in the water.

Over the past couple of years, if I've found myself in Dublin on a Sunday it'll be because we're recording The Panel. It usually ends up being a big night out. The rest of us poor saps just follow wherever Daire [O'Briain] leads us . . . by virtue of his size he's the boss, and I've had more than a few Sunday nights in some wretched Dublin nightclubs.

I won't name any of them, they know who they are and ought to be ashamed of themselves. All my friends will be at the show tonight, I suppose it could be another big night.
