AND, on the subject of gay icons, Sir Elton John's latest Broadway spectacular is already the victim of some seriously negative word-of-mouthf And it hasn't even opened yet. Elton and longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin have created a musical version of author Anne Rice's Vampire Lestat novels . . . lest we forget Neil Jordan's film of Rice's Interview with the Vampire. The result, simply entitled Lestat, drew less than enthusiastic notices during a trial run in San Francisco last winter.
Elton, reputedly less than enthusiastic with the SF production, promptly flipped his wig (boom boom, etc), radically retuning the show right up to its New York opening this weekend. Meanwhile, the notoriously merciless New York theatre critics await . . . knives sharpened.
