SIDELINE CUTS

NO SUBSTITUTE FOR ACCURACY A pat on the back for Damian Cullen, author of the Penguin Ireland Guide to Championship 2006, an information-packed handbook that features county-bycounty details, player statistics, historical facts, a guide to championship venues complete with recommended eating and drinking spots and the results of the 2005 championship.

In the latter regard, Cullen commendably gives the minutes of substitutions and . . . a muchexercised hobbyhorse of Sideline Cuts, this . . . also distinguishes between points from play and points from placed balls. Well done to him on the double. Now would other compilers of books of record kindly follow Cullen's lead?

IT'S ALL OVER BAR THE SHOUTING The race for the most memorable GAA quote of 2006 is over almost before it began. Step forward Babs "Our lads are dead, they only have to be washed" Keating. We knew when he returned to the scene of past glories . . . and of past colourful comments . . . in Tipperary that he wouldn't disappoint us. He hasn't.

His post-match remarks last Sunday were pure Babs. The only person who might possibly better them before the season is out?

Babs himself, of course.

STATUE IN MEMORY OF ENDA COLLERAN In memory of the late-great Enda Colleran a life-size bronze statue will be unveiled by incoming GAA President Nickey Brennan in Colleran's native Moylough on Saturday, 29 April at 6.00. The ceremony will also feature a special tribute to Enda by his club and county teammate Johnny Geraghty, goalkeeper on the Galway All Ireland three-in-a-row team in the mid1960s.

There will also be the Enda Colleran Sports and Health Forum at the Franciscan Agricultural College, Mountbellew, commencing on Friday, 28 April at 8.00. The panel of expert speakers will comprise Mickey Harte speaking on balance and moderation in team preparation; Donal O'Grady, who will talk on winter and summer training schedules in hurling; Professor Niall Moyna, Head of the School of Health and Human Performance at DCU and manager of the DCU's recent Sigerson Cup-winning side, speaking on the importance of exercise in the development of a healthy young population; and Eddie O'Sullivan who will deal with being "t to compete.

Outdoor activities across the weekend include a football challenge, under-age football for boys and girls at Moylough Sports"eld and an u-14 hurling blitz at Mountbellew GAA grounds.
