IT'S hard to beat the brilliant simplicity of a perfect roast chicken . . . or so celeb chef Nigel Slater keeps telling us. But of late, this classic dinner has become less appealing because of the bad press our feathered friends have been getting.
However, a review of the chicken food chain in Ireland has declared chicken safe to eat.
The industry was found to be highly regulated, which will come as some relief to the many Irish consumers for whom chicken is their main source of protein.
Safefood, which conducted the survey, said that consumers still need to ensure that chicken is cooked and handled properly to avoid illness . . . cooking it thoroughly and washing hands and utensils in contact with raw chicken is essential.
The review also revealed that 70% of the chicken used in the catering industry is from outside Ireland and the EU, but current labelling legislation means that this fact does not need to be communicated to the public.
