Portsmouth battle for a point and for survival
Bill Pierce Fratton Park

FA PREMIERSHIP PORTSMOUTH 2 BLACKBURN ROVERS 2

RESILIENT Portsmouth twice came from behind to claim a point against highflying Blackburn as the Fratton Park side desperately cling on to their Premiership status. Strikes of quality from Craig Bellamy twice put the visitors in front but Lomana LuaLua and Svetoslav Todorov hauled the home side level.

Portsmouth had enough chances to win and the point sees them remain in the bottom three on goal difference.

It was Blackburn who took the lead in the 32nd minute despite the hosts' pressure when Bellamy collected the ball on the halfway line and skipped a challenge before accelerating forward down the left. Although Linvoy Primus came across to cover, the Rovers striker fired the ball across the goalkeeper into the top right-hand corner from the left of the area.

Benjani Mwaruwari should have equalised, missing a simple chance from 10 yards, before LuaLua did with a sensational 41st-minute strike.

Keeping the ball amid close attention from Blackburn defenders, he reached the edge of the penalty area and crashed a right-footed angled shot into the right corner.

Although the game was high on effort, there was little in the way of composure with both sides desperate for the points at different ends of the table. However, Bellamy put Rovers back in front with another moment of quality in the 62nd minute. David Bentley put a sharp cross in from the right of the box which the Welshman took down with his right before turning and firing an unstoppable shot past Dean Kiely with his left.

Portsmouth persevered, however, and gained their reward when Matt Taylor sent a pacey cross in from the left-hand side and Todorov got in front of the Rovers defence to nod the ball into the net from close range.

Portsmouth mounted a grandstand finish to find a winner and Dejan Stefanovic was denied again by a superb save from Brad Friedel.
