We love a good gimmick here on Against the Head and the Munster Branch win the prize this week. Ten year tickets for the redeveloped Thomond Park are currently on sale down in the province and anybody interested can ring the number 1800 31 10 78 to book their place.
Notice anything about the number? Well, the 31st day of the 10th month back in 1978 was the day Munster beat the All Blacks at the famous Limerick ground.
Despite some complaints, the 10 year ticket for ?5,000 represents decent value. The pass entitles you to tickets for three Heineken Cup matches and four Celtic League games each season, and the option to purchase tickets for any other game run by the Munster Branch at the venue, or at another venue. In essence it works out at ?71.42 per ticket (we have a calculator) and when you consider what a ticket for a Heineken Cup game may cost in the year 2017, you might actually be paying under cost price.
The only problem we can see is if the French and English clubs spit the dummy over Heineken Cup money in the coming years and the competition is disbanded for a year or two. Or the Welsh clubs get ahead of themselves and join the Guinness Premiership. What would happen then? There must be a lot of people in the Branch keeping their fingers crossed.
