In case you were wondering, it's 20 years this week since the first edition of the world rankings came out. Jack Nicklaus had just won the Masters without a dry eye in the house, but the less emotive Bernhard Langer emerged as the first official world number one.
Much water under the bridge in those two decades with Seve Ballesteros, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Fred Couples, Nick Price, Tom Lehman, Ernie Els, David Duval, Vijay Singh and, of course, Tiger Woods having occupied the number one spot at various times. Langer hasn't done too badly in the intervening period and is currently ranked number 57, however, 20 years on, Couples is the only player from that first ranking list still in the top 50. He was in 42nd place in 1986, and fresh from his tie for third at Augusta, is now 21st.
