WILL SOCRATES MYTH EVER BE PUT TO BED?
Compiled by Enda McEvoy and Kieran Shannon

Would that Buffy Summers, she of vampire-slaying fame, could pay a visit here from Sunnydale and put a stake through the heart of certain urban myths that refuse to die.

Someone on the Betfair discussion forum recently resurrected the old chestnut about the former Brazilian captain Socrates playing soccer in the League of Ireland and - because people can never leave well enough alone in such circumstances - winning a Sigerson Cup medal as a medical student in UCD to boot. So the next time a pub bore asks you to "name the three players who won All Ireland medals and appeared in the World Cup finals", kindly inform him that there's only one: Kevin Moran.

Niall Quinn didn't win an All Ireland medal when lining out for Dublin against Galway in the 1983 minor hurling . nal, while we've yet to be treated to any even vaguely plausible evidence that Socrates ever studied in Dublin.

And no, Gerd Muller didn't win a Sigerson Cup medal in the 1970s on a Thomond College team that included Brian Mullins and Pat Spillane either?
