ENGLISH trainer Mick Channon has a good strike rate in this country, and he was quick to spot a winning opportunity for Yasoodd in the Group 3 Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial Stakes at Leopardstown yesterday.
Owned by Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, and ridden by Chris Caitlin, who was recording his first success at the venue, Yasoodd was the outsider of the five runners, but belied the lack of confidence shown in him by beating Jim Bolger's Derby hope Heliostatic, the 9/4 favourite, by a neck.
Channon didn't travel to Leopardstown, and was represented in his absence by Andy Larkin.
"He's in the Guineas, " Larkin said. "But the boss will have to talk to the owner's racing manager first before making any decision."
Trainer Aidan O'Brien was confidently expected to capture the Dimitrova 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes with the strongly-supported favourite Beauty Bright, but the hotpot had to settle for second place behind her lesser-fancied stable-companion Kamarinskaya.
The 8/1 winner was ridden by Seamus Heffernan, and she made virtually all the running to account for Fallon's mount by two lengths.
The outcome may have taken punters by surprise but not O'Brien.
"Beauty Bright had been working very well at home, and we thought she was the more forward of the two, " the Coolmore chief explained afterwards. However, he hastened to add that Kamarinskaya had good form to her credit last season, and, being a big filly, "she was only going to get better."
Kamarinskaya holds engagements in both the English and French 1,000 Guineas, and the trainer said "she'll probably take her chance in one of them."
O'Brien and Fallon had earlier gotten off the mark for the season thanks to Sacrosanct's half-length win in the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies 3-Y-O Maiden.
Meanwhile, at Cork, there was a further upset in store in the featured Imperial Call Chase, which went to Slim Pickings, from the Robert Tyner stable, by four lengths from the 5/4 favourite Sher Beau.
The 4/1 winner was partnered by Barry Geraghty, who is now just one behind Ruby Walsh in the battle for the NH jockeys championship.
Over the water at Kempton, Kandidate defied top weight for veteran Newmarket trainer Clive Brittain to spring a 20-1 surprise in the Coral Rosebery Stakes.
Last year's 2000 Guineas third led two furlongs out in the hands of Seb Sanders and powered home from the 7-2 favourite Rohaani.
