THE ?100,000 Powers Gold Cup takes centre stage at Fairyhouse this afternoon, and the Grade 1 contest, which has attracted a quality line-up of nine runners, should ensure that the threeday Fairyhouse Easter Festival gets off to a good start.
The field is led by the Michael Hourigan-trained Arteea, but while he is a useful performer in his own right, it would constitute a major surprise if he were to prevail against the likes of Barry Geraghty's mount In Compliance, the Willie Mullins-trained Missed That, Martin Brassil's Nickname and Justified.
Michael O'Brien's In Compliance was successful over this course and distance in late February before following up at a higher level at Leopardstown, and although taking another big step up in class here he is a progressive sort and has the advantage of being a fresher horse.
Missed That will be bidding to make amends for his disappointing effort in the Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham, a race in which Noel Meade's Wild Passion occupied fourth place. Justified, in contrast, was forced to miss his trip to Cheltenham, after scoping badly beforehand, and that may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Providing he gets the trip, he must have an excellent chance of gaining compensation here under Tony McCoy.
