Title just a whisker away
Ken Gaunt Reebok Stadium

FA PREMIERSHIP BOLTON WANDERERS 0 CHELSEA 2

JOSE MOURINHO saw his Chelsea side put one hand on the championship trophy after a good win yesterday at the Reebok Stadium - the same ground where they clinched the title last season.

It certainly looks like Mourinho's title now but he risked landing himself in hot water when he appeared to shove fourth official Alan Wiley after being enraged by referee Phil Dowd's decision not to book Ivan Campo for a foul.

Mourinho apologised to Wiley at half-time, which was accepted, and the Chelsea boss said of the incident: "I was unlucky.

"I was not happy with the referee's decision not to show a yellow card to Campo, because rules are rules. I was not happy, Steve (Clarke, Mourinho's assistant) was on my shoulder, I felt somebody touching him and I turned and hit the referee.

"I apologised to him, it was an accident, and he understood what happened."

Mourinho, however, is determined to keep the champagne on ice until the title is mathematically certain. "We need four points, " he after the game. "The situation, of course, is very good.

This was a fixture a lot of people were waiting for. The seven-point lead might have been reduced but we put it to nine points.

"The situation is fantastic but I want my people just to be happy with the result and the situation, not to be happy or to be singing the champions song. Not yet. Football is full of surprises."

The Chelsea boss made one change from the side that dismantled West Ham with Joe Cole replacing Maniche, who was suspended.

Bolton went into the game on the back of four straight defeats and manager Sam Allardyce made three changes to the side that went down to Liverpool. Ivan Campo, Jared Borgetti and Ricardo Vaz Te came in for Nicky Hunt, Stelios Giannakopoulos and Jay-Jay Okocha. Campo played in the holding role while Abdoulaye Faye switched to central defence with Tal Ben Haim at right back.

Despite Bolton having a poor run in the Premiership, their home record remains formidable. Indeed, they had lost only two league games at the Reebok Stadium this season going into this game.

Chelsea were slow coming out of the traps and it was the home side who set the pace of the game.

Vaz Te should have put Bolton ahead in the 23rd minute after a neat one-two with Jared Borgetti. The 19year-old Portuguese striker did well to get goal side of Claude Makelele only to see his effort come back off the post.It was a let-off for Chelsea but they continued to look slightly vulnerable at the back for a change.

Bolton skipper Kevin Nolan then whipped in a shot from 20 yards that went narrowly high and wide, much to the relief of the visiting support.

Chelsea awoke from their slumber to take the lead a minute before the break with their first real assault on the home goal.

Ivan Campo brought down Frank Lampard and it was this challenge which so enraged Mourinho that he shoved fourth official Alan Wiley. But when calm was restored, Lampard dusted himself down and drove a free kick into the box from the left that caused confusion in the Bolton defence.

Didier Drogba and John Terry went up together but it was Terry who seemed to get the final touch for his seventh goal of the season.

Allardyce made two changes at the break, bringing on Giannakopoulos and Pedersen for Vaz Te and Borgetti. Pedersen was quickly into the action and managed to manufacture some space on the edge of the Chelsea goal area after 54 minutes.

He managed to get a good connection on his effort but it cleared the bar, much to Chelsea's relief.

Soon after, however, the champions-elect killed off the home side's challenge when they extended their lead and edged closer to retaining the title after Lampard got his 19th goal of the season.

He raced forward to get on the end of a short cross from Hernan Crespo and his finish was clinical. Lampard wheeled away in delight - it was his double here last season that steered Chelsea to the title.

Fifteen of his goals have now come in the Premiership - a tally any striker would be proud of, never mind a midfielder. As for Bolton, their chances of a UEFA Cup spot are diminishing by the week and their misery increased in stoppage time when Tal Ben Haim was sent off after picking up a second yellow card.
