Revamped terrace cottage minutes from city
Valerie Shanley

THIS two-bed property in walk-totown North Strand shows how versatile these period terraced houses are for those seeking a city pad with character. No 5 Strandville Road, Dublin 3, a 78 sq m (840 sq ft) splitlevel cottage, was formerly owned by a parent for their student offspring attending a Dublin college.

The current owners, Frank Scally and Aisling Moynihan, moved in three years ago and set about creating the chic and stylish home seen here in the pictures, not to mention re-vamping a back garden past its best.

"The good thing was that the house had already been properly extended when we moved, but the down side was that it was very much the 'student pad' complete with two bathrooms and a tiny kitchen, " explains Frank.

"So we got rid of one of the bathrooms by knocking down the wall and thereby giving much more space for a proper kitchen. That transformed the house in terms of light as well as space, especially when we put in the glazed double doors leading out on to the garden.

The garden itself was a bit neglected, so we made a clean sweep there too, laying gravel and installing a raised deck at the bottom to catch the best of the sunshine."

As well as improving on the living/garden space, the couple retained original features of the house which give it additional cachet - including the cast-iron fireplace in the main bedroom, the feature-exposed brick chimney breast in the livingroom, and the solid panelled doors throughout.

Accommodation at entrance level comprises the reception hall with polished wood floorboards and white radiator cover; and also the living room (doubling as an extra bedroom when required).

Steps lead down to the first bedroom; which is followed by the sitting room- cum-dining-room with stove and an archway through to the extended and fully fitted kitchen, in turn leading directly out to the garden.

First floor accommodation comprises the shower room and the second bedroom - a double with the original fireplace and a neat and separate study area with window. This overlooks the decent sized (5.5m x 9m) garden which is framed by a raised brick-built barbecue on one side and neat railed flower beds on the other.

At the far end is that raised deck with Barna shed and sturdy outdoor furniture, ready and waiting for al fresco summer meals ahead.

For the owners, among the things they will miss out moving on is that convenience to town, plus the security of living in an old established area, says Frank.

"It's 15 minutes walking distance to the centre, great for work, but great for going out at night too. Plus this is an old, settled community where people keep an eye on everything for you - and there's a lot to be said for that."
