LOADS of people do it, but many of us still don't know how to go about it. Building an extension is the subject of a very handy, pocket-sized book, available free from the EBS Building Society, and in the form of a practical DIY and financial guide.
The title may be long-winded - Renovate, Develop, Extend! The How-To Guide to Add Value and Space to Your Home - but the basic information is all there, including tips and guidance on all of the common issues, from financing a project and finding an architect, all the way to compiling a snag list and putting the finishing touches to your home.
Dara Deering, head of mortgages at the EBS, says the company decided to produce the guide because many of its members are maximising the potential of their homes by extending rather than moving - but getting frustrated due to the dearth of practical information on the subject. Journalist Frank Dillon wrote the book, based on his own experience in the area and also drawing on research conducted into extensions and renovations. The book is available through local EBS branches, or by telephoning 1850 654 321.
