WHILE many people will take next Tuesday off to extend their Easter break, aspiring entrepreneurs - both students and nonstudents alike - can make use of the day by attending a seminar in University College Dublin (UCD) at lunchtime. Tuesday marks the halfway point of the current NovaUCD/Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Board Student Enterprise Seminar Series, which aims to promote a spirit of entrepreneurship among the student population at UCD.
The sixth series, which began at the start of this month, runs over four consecutive Tuesdays and although aimed primarily at undergraduate and postgraduate students, anyone is welcome to attend.
The seminars feature well known entrepreneurs talking about their experiences of setting up and running a business, emphasising the highs and lows of their entrepreneurial journeys and the lessons learnt along the way. After each presentation, attendees can ask questions of the guest entrepreneur.
Dr Pat Frain, director of NovaUCD, said: "Over the past two years the series has continued to attract a large audience and stimulate lively and enthusiastic debate on issues related to entrepreneurship and the establishment and development of technology-based companies. The level of interest in these seminars is evidence of a growing culture of entrepreneurship on the university campus, which augurs well for Ireland's ability to generate new ventures to sustain our knowledge-based economy and high-tech employment for UCD graduates in the future."
Speakers over the past two weeks have been Feargal Brady, CEO of Blueface, a broadband phone company, and John Beckett, founder and managing director of Adrenalin Internet Systems.
On Tuesday Colum O'Sullivan, co-founder of Cully & Sully will speak, followed by Dr John Dunne, co-founder of CTO Commercial Systems, Intune Technologies. Past speakers included: Eamonn Fallon, Daft. ie; Dr Chris Horn, Iona Technologies; and Angela Kennedy, Megazyme Ireland International. Seminars run from 12:30pm to 1:50pm in UCD.
