Michel Beroff Bartok: Piano Music EMI Classics (61m 22s) . . . . .
The merit of Bartok's piano writing lies in its percussive qualities. The intricate rhythms and vivid nationalist colours come to life when the pianistic technique extends beyond its lyrical functions. Beroff has made this quality central to his interpretation in this recording and the result makes an exciting and foot-stomping listen. All those elements of eastern European folk music imbue the music with a wonderfully free aspect. Piano students should not be without this CD: this is how you play Bartok. Bach: St Matthew Passion Naxos (54m 38s) . . . .
You may have heard a live performance of this monumental work in the past week and be looking to add it to your collection. This two-part work, which calls for doubling of choral and orchestral forces, comes here in three CDs and an English translation of the German libretto has been made available on www. naxos. com. The soloist's lines lack poignancy here but the orchestral textures are well judged and the chorus produces a warm graceful sound.
