San Francisco Jazz Collective SF Jazz Collective 2 Nonesuch . . . .
Most all-star bands seem designed to prove that all-star bands don't work, but over two albums now, the San Francisco Jazz Collective have proved that with the right mix of personnel and material, the whole can occasionally equal the sum of the parts. As those parts include saxophonist Joshua Redman, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Renee Rosnes and arranger Gil Goldstein, the whole has a lot to live up to. And it does. Last year, they tackled the music of Ornette Coleman; this year, its Coltrane. Recorded live on a US tour, this is about as good as mainstream American jazz gets. Cormac Larkin
