ONE of the reasons MPV-type vehicles are doing so well in the sales charts is that there are 90,000 families in the country with four or more children.
So space is essential and big MPVs like the Ford Galaxy have not become victims of the compact MPV's Renault Scenic and Opel Za. ra. A new full-sized Galaxy people-carrier is on the way to ensure that the marque remains Ireland's best selling premium MPV.
Billed as a new concept in "space" travel the new Galaxy has a very modern styling design which will carry through to the new Mondeo in 2007.
The innovative Ford flat system allows 32 possible seating configurations for up to seven occupants. Second and third row seats can be transformed into a flat load space without the need to remove seating. There will be 30 per cent more luggage space than the outgoing model.
Also on the way this summer for Ford is a sporty seven-seater, the SMAX. It is branded a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) because of the racier styling as well as the sports driving qualities which come thanks to the availability of the 2.5, 200bhp engine from the hot rod Focus ST.
Expect to see both vehicles in the showrooms in June with the new Galaxy coming in at the same price as the outgoing model, at ?35,000.
The S-Max should sell about ?3,000-?4,000 lower.
