JOHN WILSON PICKS SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND

THE Superquinn New World Wine sale starts Wednesday 3 May. This week I will list a few white and sparkling wines, next week the reds. Buy six bottles and you will get a further 5% discount

Under 10
Hope Estate Hunter Valley Chardonnay, Australia 2005 9.99 The white wines of the Hunter valley have a delicacy and finesse not always found in Aussie wines. I love the Semillons, but the Chardonnays can be pretty good too. This delicious fresh wine with its complex green apple and pear fruits and subtle vanilla oak is amazing value at under 10 (it is reduced from 13.99). Try it with scallops or prawns, lighter chicken dishes, or just by itself.

Under 20
Pascual Toso Sparkling Wine, Argentina 10.99 Yes, you did read it correctly, Argentina. This very hot, dry country produces huge amounts of inexpensive sparkling wine, led by the Champagne company Moet & Chandon, the largest producer in the country. Pascual Toso, a familyowned company, also make a very decent version. Champagne it isn't, but it is a very pleasant glass of lively fresh fruits with plenty of bubbles and a streak of lemon acidity. At 10.99, it would be greedy to ask for more, and with the summer on its way, I can see many a bottle being popped on the patio.

Anything goes
Boekenhoutskloof Semillon, Franschoek, South Africa 2002 23.99 I have recommended the red wines of this estate before, but the white is also quite special in its own way. It is not part of the sale, but I couldn't resist giving it a mention. Marc Kent is one of the most talented winemakers in South Africa, and he has fashioned an extraordinary wine. At 14% alcohol, it is not a shrinking violet, but it has the flavours to match; masses of butterscotch, grilled nuts and lanolin with a creamy rich texture, and great length. I would savour this with creamy chicken dishes, or a plain roast chicken.
