A NEW Irish demographic has been born.
Clopsies . . . or Children Living Off their Parents . . . Still" . . . are the subject of a new eightpart series starting on RTE Two early next month. This show focuses on adults who are still living at home with their parents and finding it impossible to buy a home of their own. It's called I'm An Adult, Get Me Out Of Here! and is presented by TV newcomer but property veteran, 33-year-old John McGuire.
Each week he will show the contestants how it is possible to fly the nest. McGuire bought his first property at 22 and now owns an interesting porfolio as well as his own company, First Credit.
The last census showed that over 150,000 people between the age of 25 and 34 were living with their parents and, says McGuire, anecdotal evidence suggests this figure has risen significantly because of our 10-year property boom. .
The economic boom has turned a social quirk into a social phenomen, creating a whole new demographic . . . called clopsies or kippers (Kids In Their Parents' Pockets Eroding Retirement Savings. ).
Kippers or clopsies fall into two categories: those that want to move out but feel they can't afford to, and those that know when they have it good. ?Kippers know the value of a cooked meal waiting for them on their return from work even if they don't pay for it and maybe even having their bed made for them.
Clopsies believe they have no choice but to remain at home because renting is 'dead money' and they can't afford a mortgage. But of course everybody has a choice. Whether they like that choice or not is another matter."
'I'm An Adult Get Me Out Of Here' starts on RTE Two at 9.30pm on Tuesday 2 May
